Project Overview

AQL were engaged to repair a yard slab in a chemical plant that had been eroded due to chemical spills. A chemical resistant lining was then to be applied to prevent such happening in the future. By achieving this it will help to extend the lifespan of the concrete by protecting it from the harsh chemicals.

client objectives

Ensure the longevity and structural integrity of the yard Conduct essential concrete repairs to prevent further deterioration and make a smooth, level surface Apply protective coatings which will resist chemicals, prevent erosion from happening again and give a long-term performance. Ensure the coating is not a slip hazard and can also deal with vehicle traffic

Scope of works

AQL carried out a restoration and protection measures, including: Surface Preparation: The damaged concrete was scabbled to make a good bonding surface and then high pressure washed to remove debris, surface deterioration and contaminants. Concrete Repairs- Due to a severe chemical spill, the area had been eroded leaving a rough, unlevel surface which had exposed aggregates and reduced rebar cover. The application of a strong, structural screed facilitated the application of the chemical resistant lining. Application of Primer- A quick-curing epoxy primer was applied to the concrete to enhance bonding of the final coatings. Non-Slip Chemical Resistant Coating Application: An anti- slip chemical resistant coating was applied to specific chemical storage concentrate to protect all concrete surfaces.

Challenges

Hazardous Chemicals: Chemicals which could cause harm may be present. Extra precautions were taken to protect operatives including PPE such as chemical resistant gloves, chemical resistant clothing and goggles.Surface Contaminants & Deterioration: The presence of accumulated grime, biofilm, and pollutants on concrete surfaces necessitated thorough mechanical preparation before coatings and repairs could be applied.Strong Chemical Concentrate: Due to the nature of the chemicals in the plant, the repair had to be able to withstand it. AQL, in partnership with suppliers, specified a system which would be more than capable of dealing with the chemical and its concentrate.

Results

Structural Longevity: The repairs and protective coatings significantly enhanced the lifespan of the concrete, ensuring long-term durability. Chemical Resistance: The chemical resistant coatings provided long-term resistance to potential chemical spills, reducing maintenance requirements. Improved Aesthetic & Functional Integrity: The yard now appears revitalised, with a clean, task specific interior that enhances its structural performance.

Conclusion

The successful completion of this yard repair highlights AQL’s expertise in chemical resistant linings and concrete repairs across all industries. Through meticulous planning, industry-leading materials, and specialist application techniques, AQL delivered a high-quality, long-lasting solution that ensures the yard remains operational and compliant for years to come.
