Hynes Yard Car Park, Galway

Project Overview

AQL was engaged to remove an existing coating and apply a new flexible waterproof coating to Hynes Yard Car Park, Galway. This system was applied to protect the concrete and prolong the life of it, while also preventing water ingress into the structure. A flexible epoxy system was applied due to the nature of the structure.

client objectives

Ensure the longevity and structural integrity of the concrete. Ensure the system prevents any water ingress A finished product that can stand up to the traffic, fuel/oil spills and load bearings A system that allows grip for vehicles and pedestrians. A line marking system to highlight parking spaces and walkways

Scope of works

AQL carried out a restoration and protection measures, including: Surface Preparation: The entire area was diamond grinded to remove the old coating and to prepare a suitable bonding surface for the application. A deep clean then took place to get rid of any debris from grinding and to remove any dust from the area. Waterproofing System- The flexible, epoxy, waterproof system was then applied over the area to seal the roof of the structure. Highlighted Areas- Walkways were installed to segregate people and vehicles, while line marking was installed to make car parking spaces.

Challenges

Fuel/ Oil Spills- Due to the nature of the structure oil and fuel spills would be common, therefore epoxy that could deal with this was used. Surface Contaminants & Deterioration: The presence of accumulated grime, biofilm, and pollutants on concrete surfaces necessitated thorough mechanical preparation before coatings and repairs could be applied. Segregating People and Traffic- AQL supplied a line marking solution to keep pedestrians safe from traffic. Structural Movement- Due to the nature of the structure, there is a certain element of movement within the car park. If a rigid coating was used it would crack, allowing water to enter the building. For this reason, a flexible epoxy coating was used to allow for this movement.

Results

Structural Longevity: The protective coatings significantly enhanced the lifespan of the concrete, ensuring long-term durability. Improved Aesthetic & Functional Integrity: The floor now appears revitalised, with a clean, task specific interior that enhances its waterproof performance, while being easy to clean and maintain. The floor also has added grip for vehicles. Waterproof- The roof of the structure is now waterproof, stopping any water ingress and protecting the concrete.

Conclusion

The successful completion of this waterproofing project highlights AQL’s expertise in waterproofing and car park solutions across all sectors. Through meticulous planning, industry-leading materials, and specialist application techniques, AQL delivered a high-quality, long-lasting solution that ensures the car park remains operational, waterproofed and protected for years to come.
