L3 Communications Workshop Floor

Project Overview

AQL was engaged to apply a resin flooring system to L3 Communications workshop in County Clare. This system was applied to protect the concrete and prolong the life of it, while also preventing wear and tear. This solution would also allow for dustproofing and ease of cleaning.

client objectives

Ensure the longevity and structural integrity of the concrete floor. Make a surface that is dustproof and easy to clean A finished product that can stand up to the harsh wear, fuel/oil spills and load bearings Install designated walkways and line marking

Scope of works

AQL carried out a restoration and protection measures, including: Surface Preparation: The entire floor area was vacuum blasted to remove any dirt or grime and to prepare a suitable bonding surface for the application. A deep clean then took place to get rid of any debris from blasting and to remove any dust from the area. DPM Primer Coat- A DPM primer coat was then applied to stop any moisture penetrating through the floor, allow for optimal bonding and to seal the floor from air bubbles that may be present within the concrete. Epoxy Filler- Epoxy filler was used to remove any blemishes or imperfections within the floor Buff Sanding- Buff sanding and cleaning was completed between each coat to remove any imperfections and to increase bonding. Application of Topcoats- The topcoats of resin were then applied in the clients specified colour to give a sleek, aesthetically pleasing result. Highlighted Areas- Coats of red and yellow were then applied for walkways and line marking.

Challenges

Fuel/ Oil Spills- Due to the nature of the workshop oil and fuel spills would be common, a resin that can deal with this was therefore used. Surface Contaminants & Deterioration: The presence of accumulated grime, biofilm, and pollutants on concrete surfaces necessitated thorough mechanical preparation before coatings and repairs could be applied. Line Marking- Traffic and personnel needed to be segregated, so AQL installed line marking and walkways.

Results

Structural Longevity: The protective coatings significantly enhanced the lifespan of the concrete, ensuring long-term durability. Chemical Resistance: The resin has a chemical resistance to allow for fuel and oil spills. Improved Aesthetic & Functional Integrity: The floor now appears revitalised, with a clean, task specific interior that enhances its structural performance, while being easy to clean and maintain. Dustproofing/ DPM – The floor has been dustproofed and moisture proofed leaving the area much easier to keep clean.

Conclusion

The successful completion of this floor highlights AQL’s expertise in industrial resin flooring across all sectors. Through meticulous planning, industry-leading materials, and specialist application techniques, AQL delivered a high-quality, long-lasting solution that ensures the floor remains operational and protected for years to come.
