Sulphuric Acid Bund- Water Treatment Plant

Project Overview

AQL were engaged to apply a chemical resistant lining and repair the concrete to a sulphuric acid bund in Clara Water Treatment Plant, Offaly. Overtime, the existing coating had broken down due to chemical spills, exposing and damaging the concrete in some areas. AQL specified and installed an application to restore and protect the concrete fail-safe bund for many years to come.

client objectives

Ensure the longevity and structural integrity of the bund Conduct essential concrete repairs to prevent further deterioration. Apply protective coatings which will resist chemicals and give a long-term performance.

Scope of works

AQL carried out a restoration and protection measures, including: Surface Preparation: All surfaces within the bund were mechanically prepped, followed by dust and debris removal to allow for a good bonding surface Concrete Repairs- Due to a severe chemical spill, a large hole had formed in the concrete. The area was prepped, rebar treated and a chemical resistant resin solution was used to fix the area. All blowholes or imperfections were also filled using an epoxy filler system. Application of Primer- A quick-curing epoxy primer was applied to the concrete to enhance bonding of the final coatings. Chemical Resistant Coating Application: Chemical resistant coating was applied to specific chemical storage concentrate to protect all concrete surfaces.

Challenges

Hazardous Chemicals: Chemicals which could cause harm may be present. Extra precautions were taken to protect operatives including PPE such as chemical resistant gloves, chemical resistant clothing and goggles. Surface Contaminants & Deterioration: The presence of accumulated grime, biofilm, and pollutants on concrete surfaces necessitated thorough mechanical preparation before coatings and repairs could be applied. Strong Chemical Concentrate: Due to the nature of the chemical in the tanks, the bund had to be able to withstand it. AQL, in partnership with suppliers, specified a system which would be more than capable of dealing with the chemical and its concentrate.

Results

Structural Longevity: The repairs and protective coatings significantly enhanced the lifespan of the bund, ensuring long-term durability. Chemical Resistance: The chemical resistant coatings provided long-term resistance to potential chemical spills, reducing maintenance requirements. Improved Aesthetic & Functional Integrity: The bund now appears revitalised, with a clean, task specific interior that enhances its structural performance. Easy to Clean: Due to the smooth and sleek surfaces achieved, the bund is now easy to clean and maintain.

Conclusion

The successful completion of the sulphuric acid bund refurbishment highlights AQL’s expertise in chemical resistant linings in the water treatment and many other industries. Through meticulous planning, industry-leading materials, and specialist application techniques, AQL delivered a high-quality, long-lasting solution that ensures the bund remains operational and compliant for years to come.
