Vacuum Blasting, Multi-Storey Car Park, Limerick

Project Overview

AQL were engaged to vacuum blast the floors in a multi-storey car park in Limerick. Over time, the concrete has become polished and has become slippery due to traffic. AQL proposed vacuum blasting methods to increase grip, while causing minimal disturbance to traffic and pedestrians.

Industrial floor grinding machines with hoses attached are positioned in a dimly lit underground parking garage with several parked cars in the background.

client objectives

Create a surface with grip and traction for cars and pedestrians when the floor is wet and dry The car park must be kept open at all times

Scope of works

Vacuum Blasting- The car park floor was vacuum blasted using our closed circuit units to create a profiled surface that allows for grip in the wet and dry. Our dust collecting units allowed for a clean job, causing minimal disruptions to the running of the car park

Challenges

Polished Concrete- The concrete was smooth, resulting in a lack of traction for cars and in turn, become a safety hazard, especially when wet. AQL returned traction and grip to the car park floor by making the concrete profiled using vacuum blasting Car Park Must Stay Operational- Due to the nature of the building, it was important that all areas of the structure were accessible and operational at all time. This ruled out any painted systems due to application and curing times, hence the use of the vacuum blasters. Line marking- The line marking in the building was in good order and was to be protected. AQL’s highly trained operatives have unmatched experience using this equipment, resulting in no damage to the paint. Certain protection methods were also put in place where necessary.

Results

Improved Traction- The vacuum blasting methods have increased grip through the car park for both cars and pedestrians in the wet and dry making it a much safer place Improved Aesthetics- Vacuum blasting has revitalised the floor of the car park. This is due to the mechanical method removing dirt, grime and staining

Conclusion

The successful completion of this vacuum blasting project highlights AQL’s expertise in surface preparation across a broad range of sectors. Through meticulous planning, industry-leading equipment and experienced operatives, AQL delivered a high quality, long lasting solution that ensures the car park will be a safer place for many years to come.
