Wastewater Treatment Plant, Castlebar, Mayo

Project Overview

AQL were engaged to apply a chemical resistant lining to steel effluent tanks from a pharmaceutical plant. Overtime, the existing coating had broken down, exposing the surface of erosion. AQL specified and installed an application to restore and protect the tank for many years to come.

client objectives

Ensure the longevity and structural integrity of the tank Apply protective coatings which will resist chemicals and gases and give a long-term performance Ensure all corrosion and debris is removed

Scope of works

AQL carried out a restoration and protection measures, including: Ventilation- Dust extraction units were put in place to remove the dust from shot blasting Surface Preparation: All surfaces within the tank were shot blasted to remove contaminants, existing coatings and to make a key for the new system to bond to. Flexible Chemical Resistant Coating Application: A flexible chemical resistant coating system was applied to specific chemical storage concentrate and gases to protect all surfaces within the tank.

Challenges

Hazardous Chemicals: Chemicals which could cause harm may be present. Extra precautions were taken to protect operatives including PPE such as chemical resistant gloves, chemical resistant clothing and goggles. Surface Contaminants & Deterioration: The presence of accumulated grime, biofilm, and pollutants on concrete surfaces necessitated thorough mechanical preparation before coatings and repairs could be applied. Strong Chemical Concentrate: Due to the nature of the chemical in the tanks, the bund had to be able to withstand it. AQL, in partnership with suppliers, specified a system which would be more than capable of dealing with the chemical and its concentrate. Dust- Due to the nature of abrasive blasting, specialised dust extraction units were in place to remove dust from the tank.

Results

Structural Longevity: The protective coatings significantly enhanced the lifespan of the tank, ensuring long-term durability. Chemical Resistance: The chemical resistant coatings provided long-term resistance to the chemicals, reducing maintenance requirements. Improved Aesthetic & Functional Integrity: The tank now appears revitalised, with a clean, task specific interior that enhances its structural performance. Easy to Clean: Due to the smooth and sleek surfaces achieved, the tank is now easy to clean and maintain.

Conclusion

The successful completion of the effluent tanks refurbishment highlights AQL’s expertise in chemical resistant linings in wastewater treatment and many other industries. Through meticulous planning, industry-leading materials, and specialist application techniques, AQL delivered a high-quality, long-lasting solution that ensures the tank remains operational and compliant for years to come.
