Project Overview

AQL was engaged to complete active water stopping to utility ducts in Intel, County Kildare. Ground water was traveling within the utility ducts and around the pipe penetrations, which was in turn flooding the manhole chambers. AQL used specialised water stopping methods to stop these leaks and seal the chambers.

client objectives

Stop all water travelling through the utility ducts Stop all water leaking around the pipe penetrations Ensure no water is entering the chambers

Scope of works

AQL carried out waterproofing and active water stopping methods, including: Sealing Ducts- A duct sealing system was used to stop the heavy waterflow through the utility ducts. The ducts were sealed at both ends with a method that can be shaped around all services running within the ducts to give a 100% seal. Sealing Pipe Penetrations- Crack injection was then used to stop water leaks around the pipe penetrations and prevent water ingress into the chambers.

Challenges

Access- The chambers were 4 to 5 metres underground and are deemed as a high risk confined space. Operatives involved in this job were all fully trained in high risk confined space and the correct safety equipment, safety methods and escape plans were in place Water Pressure- There was a large amount of water travelling through the ducts with significant pressure that could not be stopped for sealing. Therefore, a system was used that can be installed while waterflow is present and can stop up to 13 bar of water pressure.

Results

Sealed Ducts-The ducts are now dry and sealed, leading to the services not being exposed to water or moisture resulting in damage. Dry Chambers- Thanks to the water stopping systems, the chambers are now dry and available to access for maintenance. This will also protect the concrete as it is no longer in contact with water.

Conclusion

The successful completion of this waterproofing project highlights AQL’s expertise in waterproofing, resin crack injection and active water stopping across all sectors. Through meticulous planning, industry-leading materials, and specialist application techniques, AQL delivered a high-quality, long-lasting solution that ensures the ducts and chambers are now sealed from any water.
