Lime Silos, ENVA, Shannon and Portlaoise

Project Overview

AQL were engaged to do a comprehensive restoration to the exterior of Lime Silos in ENVA, Shannon. Due to the client being impressed with the manner of how the works were carried out and the end result, AQL were then awarded the restoration of the Lime Silos in ENVA, Portlaoise. Over time, the silos exhibited signs of weathering, structural wear, and required essential repairs to maintain integrity and ensure they could stand up to the conditions.

client objectives

Ensure the longevity and structural integrity of the structures Apply protective coatings which will resist the adverse weather conditions Aesthetically pleasing Remove all rust and grime

Scope of works

AQL carried out a restoration and protection measures, including: Encapsulation and Scaffolding: A full scaffolding encapsulation was built to contain all the debris created, stopping pollution to the air. A scaffolding platform was constructed to allow for operatives to carry out the work in an efficient and safe manner. Surface Preparation: All of the steel was shot blasted to remove the existing coating and any debris. Shot blasting was all done to SA 2.5 as per paint suppliers recommendation. Primer- A primer was applied as part of the paint system to allow for the best compatibility for the protective coating. Protective Coating- A C5 classified protective coating system was applied to protect the structure from adverse weather and any other conditions it may encounter.

Challenges

Surface Contaminants & Deterioration: The presence of accumulated grime, biofilm, and other contaminants on the steel surfaces necessitated thorough mechanical preparation before coatings and repairs could be applied. Contamination/ Pollutants: To prevent any contaminants or pollution to the air a full scaffolding encapsulation was designed and installed by AQL. Access- A scaffolding working platform was built to allow AQL to complete the work in an effective and safe fashion.

Results

Structural Longevity: The preparation and protective coatings significantly enhanced the lifespan of the steel, ensuring long-term durability. Weather and Erosion Resistance: The coating will protect the structure from the weather conditions it will experience. Improved Aesthetic & Functional Integrity: The structure now appears revitalised, with a clean, task specific surface that enhances its structural performance.

Conclusion

The successful completion of this structural protection highlights AQL’s expertise in specialised steelworks and protective coatings in the maritime industry and across other industries. Through meticulous planning, industry-leading materials, and specialist application techniques, AQL delivered a high-quality, long-lasting solution that ensures these silos remains operational and protected for years to come.
